Finkelstein Thompson LLP is investigating claims that computer games Spore and Mass Effect may disrupt a computer’s operations by automatically installing an irremovable program to a computer’s hard drive. According to recently-filed complaints, customers who purchase and install Electronic Arts (EA) games Spore and Mass Effect on to their computers unknowingly install an anti-piracy program called SecuROM. EA does not notify purchasers that SecuROM will be installed nor does EA state the program’s nature and function. According to the complaints, SecuROM cannot be removed from a computer’s hard drive and may cause a number of computer problems, including: the disabling of software and hardware operations, the disruption of other computer programs, and making the computer vulnerable to attacks by hackers.
