DirecTV Receiver Box Leasing Fee E-mail
February 15, 2008

Finkelstein Thompson LLP is investigating allegations that DirecTV fraudulently charges its customers a leasing fee for DirecTV television receivers that its customers have already purchased.

DirecTV provides satellite television to consumers throughout the United States.  In order to receive the satellite signal, a DirecTV customer connects their television to a DirecTV satellite dish and DirecTV receiver box.  A consumer can purchase a DirecTV receiver box through national retailers, such as Costco, Best Buy and Circuit City.  The price range of a DirecTV receiver box is between $100 and $1000 depending on the receiver’s capabilities.  Once a customer has “purchased” a receiver, and activated their service with DirecTV, customers are then charged a monthly “leasing fee” of $4.99 by DirecTV for the receiver.   Moreover, at the end of the “lease term”, a customer is required to return the receiver to DirecTV in working condition.  Customers are not notified at the point of sale that they are merely leasing the receiver, rather than purchasing it.

If you have purchased a DirecTV receiver box, and your monthly DirecTV bill includes a leasing fee by DirecTV, and you wish to discuss your rights and interests in this matter, please either submit a form, or contact our Washington, DC office toll-free at (877) 800-1050.
