Finkelstein Thompson LLP is investigating allegations that Samsung Electronics America, Inc. (“Samsung”) transmitted firmware to Blu-ray players resulting in subsequent damage and data loss.

Samsung manufactures and sells Blu-ray disc players which play Blu-ray movie discs and can also stream movies and music over the Internet. Consumers must install firmware updates to receive access the latest features and remain compatible with existing functions. On October 31, 2009, Samsung released firmware update version 2.05 to allow the Blu-ray players to play newly released movie titles. There are consumer reports that the firmware update damaged Blu-ray players to the point where some no longer function. Consumers also claim that Samsung is charging a fee to repair the Blu-ray players regardless of the warranty status.
